Epstein Files & Trump: Base Divided, New Legal Battles

The release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein has coincided with internal conflict among supporters of Donald Trump, leading to a public falling out between the former president and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. A range of issues are fueling divisions within Trump’s base, from U.S. support for Israel to debates over immigration and conspiracy theories.

‘America First’

Disagreement over U.S. support for Israel was one of the first points of contention between Greene and Trump, and much of the Republican party. Greene labeled Israel’s attacks on Gaza a “genocide” in July, preceding a similar assessment from a UN commission of inquiry in September. Right-wing commentators Tucker Carlson and Steve Bannon have also voiced criticism of U.S. support for Israel, with Carlson recently stating, “The idea that they’ve killed tens of thousands of women and children, non-combatants, accidentally, is a lie. No, they’ve murdered them.” While most Republicans in Congress remain supportive of Israel, younger Republicans are more likely to hold differing views; one recent poll found 27 percent of millennial and Generation Z Republicans believe the U.S. provides too much military aid to Israel, compared to 16 percent of older Republicans.

Nick Fuentes

A controversial event within the MAGA sphere was Tucker Carlson’s decision to interview white supremacist Nick Fuentes. Fuentes, who has praised Hitler, has a significant online following despite being widely condemned as an extremist. The interview sparked outrage, with figures like Ben Shapiro calling Carlson a “super-spreader of vile ideas” and Senator Ted Cruz accusing him of spreading “poison.” The fallout impacted the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, after its president defended Carlson, leading to resignations from board members. At a recent event, US Vice-President JD Vance warned against applying “purity tests” to others on their side of politics, but also stated that anyone attacking his wife could “eat shit.”

Health Insurance

A dispute over the cost of health insurance contributed to the recent record-length U.S. government shutdown. Democrats insisted on funding subsidies to lower health insurance costs, while Trump opposed yielding to their demands. However, some Republicans now support funding the subsidies, and four Republicans recently joined Democrats in a petition to force a vote on the issue – the same maneuver used to release the Epstein files. A recent poll commissioned by a Republican political group showed half of Republican respondents also wanted the subsidies kept in place.

H-1B Visas

Debate over H-1B visas, used to bring skilled workers into the U.S., has also caused friction. Big Tech companies and their supporters defend the visas, while some MAGA followers argue they displace American workers. Trump has imposed a $US100,000 fee on the visas but also expressed support for the program, stating America needs to “bring in talent,” a position that drew criticism from some of his supporters. Conservative radio host Erick Erickson said it was the “very first time I have seen so many people who have long been supporters of the president furious with the president.”

Charlie Kirk Conspiracy Theories

Conspiracy theories surrounding the death of Charlie Kirk have circulated online, with Candace Owens suggesting potential involvement from Israeli, French, and Egyptian operatives. These claims have been met with criticism from other conservative commentators, including Tim Pool and Ben Shapiro, who accused Owens of spreading “vicious” and “conspiratorial nonsense.” Kirk’s widow has asked Owens to “stop.” The pair later had what Owens calls an “extremely productive” meeting.

Cost of Living

Trump’s aides are encouraging him to focus more on “affordability,” but he has struggled to stay on message, at one point dismissing the issue as a Democratic “hoax.” Polls indicate low approval ratings for Trump on the issue of cost of living, though he maintains strong support among Republicans. Some advisors are urging him to adopt a “pragmatic economic populism,” but he has shown limited interest in the message.
