An explosion damaged a Jewish school in Amsterdam early Saturday, though no injuries were reported. The city’s mayor described the incident as a deliberate attack against the Jewish community.
Attack in Amsterdam
The explosion at the school, located in an upscale residential neighborhood on Amsterdam’s south side, caused limited damage, according to Mayor Femke Halsema. Police and firefighters responded quickly to the scene.
“This is a cowardly act of aggression against the Jewish community,” Halsema said. “Jewish people in Amsterdam are increasingly confronted with antisemitism. This is unacceptable.”
Recent Attacks
Security at synagogues and Jewish institutions in the Dutch capital had already been heightened prior to the attack. This incident follows an explosion at a synagogue in Rotterdam on Thursday, which also caused no injuries.
Four suspects were apprehended Thursday in connection with the Rotterdam bombing after police stopped a vehicle driving suspiciously near another synagogue. A group calling itself Ashab Al Yamim claimed responsibility for the Rotterdam attack.
Similar incidents have been reported in neighboring Belgium and elsewhere. An explosion caused a fire at a synagogue in Liege, Belgium, on Monday. Earlier this week, a synagogue in Michigan was targeted in a vehicle-ramming incident, and several synagogues in Canada have faced attacks, including shootings, over the past month.
