Hastings’ Frimley Pools closing, to be replaced by grass

The Hastings District Council will remove the pool infrastructure at Frimley Park, citing low usage rates and unsustainable investment. The land will remain public recreation space, protected under the Reserves Act, and will be grassed over following the removal of the pools and associated facilities.

Other aquatic facilities in the district are operating at around 50% capacity, even during peak times, leading the council to determine continued investment in the Frimley complex was no longer responsible.

The council sought groups interested in taking over the complex in 2025, but no viable proposals were received. As a result, the 50m, learner, and toddler pools will be filled with concrete, fill, gravel, and topsoil.

Associated paved areas, sheds, shade sails, barbecue facilities, seating, and a basketball hoop will also be removed. The main buildings, grandstand, and fencing will be retained for potential future uses.

Work is scheduled to take place Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. over six weeks, weather permitting, with possible Saturday morning work between 7 a.m. and midday if needed. Frimley Park will remain open throughout the project, with work confined to a fenced area.

No notable trees in Frimley Park will be affected by the work. The land will remain protected as Recreation Reserve land, preventing its sale or development for residential or commercial purposes.
