Iran Under Fire: Israel & US Escalation

The conflict in the Middle East escalated sharply as the United States and Israel launched a campaign targeting Iran, with Iranian and allied forces retaliating against Israel, Gulf states, and critical energy infrastructure. The death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has further fueled the conflict, setting the stage for a prolonged period of instability.

US President Donald Trump indicated the operations against Iran are likely to last four to five weeks, but he stated he was prepared for a longer duration. The US aims to destroy Iran’s missile capabilities, eliminate its naval capacity, and prevent the country from developing nuclear weapons, as well as halting support for groups like Hezbollah.

Trump described the current actions as “our last, best chance” to address the threats posed by the Iranian regime. Iran had previously warned that any attack would lead to a wider regional conflict, and that threat has now materialized with attacks targeting Israel, Gulf Arab states, and crude oil supplies.

The conflict has already had widespread consequences, including incoming fire in safe havens like Dubai, hundreds of thousands of stranded airline passengers, a surge in oil prices, and pledges from US allies to intercept Iranian missiles and drones.

In a separate incident, US forces mistakenly shot down three American F-15E Strike Eagles while responding to Iranian attacks, with all six pilots ejecting safely. Qatar’s air force reported downing two Iranian Sukhoi Su-24 bombers.

Israel and the US have targeted Iranian missile sites and its navy, claiming to have destroyed headquarters and warships. Airstrikes have hit Tehran, and Iranian security official Ali Larijani vowed there would be no negotiations with the United States.

The death toll continues to rise, with at least 555 people killed in Iran, 11 in Israel, over two dozen in Lebanon due to Hezbollah attacks, four American troops, and three people in the United Arab Emirates, as well as one each in Kuwait and Bahrain.

Attacks on oil infrastructure have further destabilized global markets, with QatarEnergy halting liquefied natural gas production and European natural gas prices surging by 40%. A drone attack targeted Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura oil refinery, though defenses reportedly intercepted the incoming aircraft.

Several ships have been attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil trade. Iran has also been accused of targeting the Natanz nuclear enrichment site, though Israel and the US have not confirmed this.

Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for missile attacks on Israel, prompting a large-scale Israeli response targeting Lebanon, resulting in at least 31 deaths and 149 injuries. Iran-allied militias in Iraq have also launched drone attacks against US forces.

The US military has deployed B-2 stealth bombers to strike Iranian ballistic missile facilities. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated the US mission is clear and not focused on nation-building. Trump has also indicated openness to dialogue with new Iranian leadership.

The streets of Tehran are largely deserted as residents seek shelter during airstrikes. Reports indicate increased security measures and checkpoints throughout the city.
