Jet Li Reflects on Early Fatherhood and Parental Anxieties

International martial arts star Jet Li recently opened up about his experiences as a young father and the societal pressures he faced regarding the gender of his children. In a conversation with his youngest daughter, Jada, the 63-year-old actor reflected on the anxieties he felt when he became a father at age 25.

Jet Li’s Decision to Pursue a Grandson for His Mother

Li explained that he initially felt conflicted about becoming a parent at such a young age. He also revealed that he was influenced by traditional Chinese cultural expectations, which placed a high value on having a son. According to Li, his siblings had all given birth to daughters, leaving his mother disappointed. Seeking to please her, Li decided to try for a grandson, noting that he felt significant pressure to fulfill this desire.

When his first daughter, Li Si, was born, Li admitted to feeling overwhelmed. He described the newborn as being as small as a “little toy,” which left him feeling nervous and unsure of how to handle her. Due to his busy work schedule at the time, he relied on a nanny to assist with childcare.

Huang Qiuyan and the Birth of Li Taimi

Li further shared that he had not originally planned to have a second child. However, after his then-wife, Huang Qiuyan, suggested trying again in the hope that it might be a boy, he agreed. The couple subsequently had a second daughter, Li Taimi. During the interview, Jada jokingly teased her father about his repeated attempts to have a son, pointing out that he ultimately fathered four daughters.

The actor, who has been married twice, also used the opportunity to address long-standing rumors regarding his relationship with his children from his first marriage. Li stated that his current wife, Nina Li Chi, had previously set aside assets for his two eldest daughters, ensuring they would be financially secure for their entire lives.
