London Rail Disruption as Trackside Fires and Station Closures Hit Network

London’s public transport network is grappling with a severe combination of planned major engineering works and unexpected trackside fires, leaving commuters navigating significant delays across multiple lines.

Charing Cross and Waterloo East Three-Week Closure

Commuters travelling into central London face major changes to their journeys as London Charing Cross and Waterloo East stations shut for a 22-day period from 26 July to 16 August. Network Rail says the works are part of a major £20m project which Network Rail says will improve reliability and safety for train users. According to Southeastern Railway, the closures will allow the operator to complete a once-in-a-generation £20 million programme of track, platform and structures upgrades.

Some 1.8km (1.1 miles) of track are set to be laid and 16 sets of switches and crossings, which allow trains to move from one track to another, installed between Charing Cross and Waterloo East, replacing rail equipment that has been used for 36 years. The essential improvements include 1,800 metres of new track, upgraded track drainage at Waterloo East station, rebuilt platforms at Charing Cross and structural repairs on the 175-year-old Hungerford Bridge. The ends of the platforms at Charing Cross nearest to Hungerford Bridge will also be rebuilt with new foundations. These are currently subsiding, and the concrete surfaces are deteriorating, according to Network Rail. Waterloo East will see upgrades to track drainage in order to maintain track quality and a smooth ride at full line speed for passengers. The three-week closure will also allow engineers to make structural repairs to Hungerford Bridge, which dates back to 1864 and takes the railway over the Thames.

Niva Yadav noted: A reminder that Waterloo East and Charing Cross are both closed from July 26 until August 16 due to planned engineering works. The £20million engineering project will mean Southeastern services will be diverted to other London stations, while others will terminate at London Bridge. Southeastern services into Charing Cross will be diverted to London Victoria.

Trackside Fires Disrupt Greater Anglia and Southern Networks

Compounding the summer engineering disruption, a series of trackside fires has forced unexpected cancellations and delays across multiple lines. The blaze damaged signalling equipment near Stratford on Friday evening, causing significant issues at the east London station across the weekend. Network Rail engineers are working as quickly as possible to repair the damaged infrastructure and restore the signalling equipment back to normal. Routes to and from London Liverpool Street continue to be affected, including services to Norwich, Ipswich, Clacton-on-Sea, Braintree, Colchester Town, and Southend Victoria.

Train services running through this station will be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until further notice, according to Greater Anglia. A Greater Anglia spokesperson said: As a result of this, a reduced number of Greater Anglia train services can run via Stratford. This morning, a fire alert in Stratford caused multiple disruptions. Meanwhile, the small blaze affected services for Gatwick Express, Southern, and Thameslink trains after it was reported about 1.40pm on Tuesday (July 7). Although the fire has been extinguished and lines have reopened, commuters were warned to expect delays of up to 20 minutes. The disruption is expected to continue until 3.30pm as services return to normal. Passengers have been advised to travel on their usual routes but to allow for the delays. A British Transport Police spokesperson said: Officers were called at around 1.30pm today (7 July) to reports of a small lineside fire near East Croydon railway station. Officers responded with the London Fire Brigade. The incident is not being treated as suspicious.
