Manchester United released a statement affirming its commitment to inclusivity following controversial remarks made by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe regarding immigration in the United Kingdom.
Ratcliffe’s Comments and Apology
Ratcliffe apologized on Thursday for causing offense with his comments made during a Sky News interview on Wednesday, where he stated, “You can’t have an economy with 9 million people on benefits and huge levels of immigrants coming in…I mean, the UK is being colonized. It’s costing too much money. The UK has been colonized by immigrants.” His remarks drew criticism from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.
Ratcliffe later clarified his intention, stating he aimed to emphasize the need for managed immigration alongside investment in skills, industry, and jobs to ensure shared prosperity. He added that his comments were made while discussing economic growth at the European Industry Summit in Antwerp.
Manchester United’s Response
“Manchester United prides itself on being an inclusive and welcoming club,” the Premier League club said in a statement. “Our diverse group of players, staff and global community of supporters, reflect the history and heritage of Manchester; a city that anyone can call home.”
The club highlighted its “All Red All Equal” campaign, launched in 2016, and its commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, noting its achievement of the Premier League’s Advanced Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Standard.
Criticism and FA Review
The Manchester United Muslim Supporters’ Club (MUMSC) expressed dissatisfaction with Ratcliffe’s apology, stating it did not adequately address the seriousness of his remarks. The group emphasized the weight of the term “colonized” and its implications.
The English Football Association (FA) is reportedly aware of Ratcliffe’s comments and is looking into the matter, potentially focusing on FA Rule E3.1, which addresses behavior that brings the game into disrepute. A breach of this rule, particularly one referencing ethnicity or nationality (Rule E3.2), could lead to further action.
Burnham’s Criticism
Andy Burnham criticized Ratcliffe’s comments, stating they contradicted Manchester’s history as a welcoming city. He also directed criticism towards the Glazer family, the club’s majority stakeholders, accusing them of prioritizing financial gain over contribution to the community.
