As Michael Carrick prepares for his first full season in charge of Manchester United, defensive stability has emerged as a central talking point. The 44-year-old manager takes the helm across four distinct fronts for the first time—the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and a return to the Champions League after a two-year absence, according to The Guardian.

Carrick’s Early Stability and Defensive Scrutiny

When Carrick took temporary charge in January following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, he navigated 17 league matches while United were out of the other competitions. According to The Guardian, he lifted the club from seventh place and nine points behind Aston Villa in third up to six points ahead of them. United lost just twice during that 17-match stretch—falling 2-1 to Newcastle and Leeds—and conceded 18 times, establishing a hard-to-beat reputation.

However, a closer look at the five central defenders tasked with securing the backline raises uncomfortable questions. While full-backs Noussair Mazraoui, Diogo Dalot, and Luke Shaw can also operate centrally, Carrick harbours concerns over his core defensive options, with no plans to strengthen unless departures occur, as reported by The Guardian.

Youthful Potential in Yoro and Heaven

The defensive unit blends youth and experience, though the younger operators are still maturing. Leny Yoro, 20, joined from Lille in 2024 for £52m and has made 66 appearances. Standing 6ft 3in with a serious turn of pace and calm style, Yoro is the more senior of the young pair but has occasionally been prone to errors, according to The Guardian.

Alongside him is 19-year-old Ayden Heaven, who signed in February 2025 from Arsenal for a nominal fee and made 11 league starts last season. Blessed with technique, speed, and a more robust 6ft 2in build, Heaven acknowledges the need for patience.
