The Seattle Mariners defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-2 Wednesday night at T-Mobile Park, but the game was overshadowed by hit batters, a bench-clearing incident, and multiple ejections. The victory snapped a four-game winning streak for the Tigers (55-59), while the Mariners improved to 56-59 on the season.
Julio Rodríguez Sparks Seattle Lead Before Eighth-Inning Fracas
The turning point in the contest occurred in the sixth inning. After Detroit manager A.J. Hinch intentionally walked Dominic Canzone with two outs, Julio Rodríguez hit a first-pitch fastball from reliever Brenan Hanifee for a three-run home run into the right-field seats. Rodríguez celebrated demonstratively and tossed his bat approximately 50 feet as Seattle claimed a 3-0 lead.
Bryan Woo’s Start and Hit Batters Set Tense Stage
Seattle starting pitcher Bryan Woo delivered seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and one walk. In doing so, he became the first Major League pitcher in four years to toss seven scoreless innings while hitting three batters, matching a feat last accomplished by San Diego’s Yu Darvish on June 7, 2022.
Woo’s hit batters began in the third inning when Tigers rookie Max Clark took a pitch off his elbow guard. Riley Greene and Zach McKinstry were subsequently hit by back-foot breaking balls in the fourth and fifth innings, with McKinstry’s award granted after a replay review. Detroit starter Drew Anderson pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings to open the game for the visitors.
Eighth-Inning Ejections and Benches Clearing
The tension boiled over in the eighth inning after Detroit left-hander Enmanuel De Jesus hit Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh in the ribs with a 94 mph fastball leading off the bottom of the seventh. In the top of the eighth, Mariners relief pitcher Gabe Speier took over and retired the first two batters before throwing consecutive inside fastballs to Gleyber Torres. After Torres ducked away from the first offering, the second pitch struck him on the upper left leg at 96.3 mph.
The incident made Torres the fourth Detroit batter plunked during the contest. Benches and bullpens immediately cleared, with players gathering around home plate. According to reports from ESPN and Sportsnet, no punches were thrown during the gathering. Following a brief conference by the umpires, Speier was ejected from the game. The decision prompted Mariners manager Dan Wilson to run from the dugout to argue, resulting in his own ejection.
Late-Game Home Runs and Series Conclusion
The retaliation attempt quickly backfired for Seattle. Entering in relief of Speier, Eduard Bazardo surrendered a 424-foot, two-run home run to Dillon Dingler—his 25th of the season—bringing the Tigers within a run at 3-2.
However, the Mariners padded their lead in the bottom of the eighth when Colt Emerson hit a home run off De Jesus, snapping the reliever’s 17-inning scoreless streak. Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz pitched a scoreless ninth inning to secure the save. The two teams conclude their series Thursday afternoon, with Tigers left-hander Framber Valdez scheduled to face Mariners right-hander Bryce Miller.
