Microsoft will unveil a new laptop powered by Nvidia chips on Wednesday, October 7, seeking to turn Windows into a platform for AI agents to handle tasks like writing code without accessing the cloud, Reuters reported. The event in San Francisco, starting at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET, marks the company’s first laptop event in two years and will feature Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella taking the stage to introduce the Surface Laptop Ultra.
Microsoft Shifts Cloud Work to Windows Machines
For Microsoft, this strategy relies on the assumption that processing currently handled by its expensive Azure cloud infrastructure can be offloaded onto high-performance Windows computers in residential and office settings. The Redmond, Washington-based firm retains a stronghold in this market, where its customers foot the hardware bills. For Nvidia, cracking the Windows PC market helps it go after one of the last major markets dominated by longtime rivals Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, according to Reuters.
Memory Chip Shortages Drive up Hardware Prices
A significant question for the new hardware is pricing, after a memory-chip crunch drove up desktop and laptop costs. When Microsoft first proposed executing artificial intelligence workloads directly on personal computers two years ago as a cost-saving measure, most of those laptops retailed under $2,000. Recently, however, Nvidia increased the price of an AI desktop machine called the DGX Spark by about 75% to $6,950 due to surging costs of its 128 gigabytes of memory, Reuters reported. CNET noted that computer hardware companies have raised prices across the board over the last year to keep up with rising manufacturing costs, with advanced chips in hot demand for data centers, laptops, and phones.
The software wasn’t ready, but the hardware was. Now the hardware is ready and the hardware is too expensive to actually run it locally. So it’s becoming this thing where only the people who have the budget can really afford to run AI locally.

Security Challenges for Local AI Agents
A key challenge for Microsoft and Nvidia will be showing that agents can be safely contained on personal computers. According to Reuters coverage, Nvidia is taking measures to stop a recurrence of the Hugging Face AI hub breach, while Apple aims to strengthen security controls surrounding how AI agents gain complete access to a Mac hard drive.
