On The Up: Farm owner offers Dannevirke dog owners a safe, private off-leash haven at ‘Stream Explorer’

A New Zealand farm is now offering a dedicated space for dogs to roam freely, providing owners a private and stimulating environment for their pets. The 3.5-acre property, named Stream Explorer, opened to the public on Waitangi Day.

Dog Paradise Opens in Tararua District

Elizabeth Mallory created the space after noticing how much her own dogs enjoyed the land. “My dogs, of course, love it so much I started thinking it’s really sad that other people and their dogs don’t have the opportunity to explore places like this,” she said.

Stream Explorer allows dog owners to book hourly sessions, with rates of $20 per hour for up to five dogs or $35 per hour for up to 10. During these sessions, owners have exclusive access to the area for their dogs to explore.

The property features a meandering stream, mature trees, and both open and secluded bush areas. Mallory described the topography as varied, with hillsides and flat spaces.

“It’s a safe space people can bring their dogs… you basically book it, and you have it to yourself for that time period, and let your dog explore and have a great time,” Mallory explained.

Mallory noted that traditional dog parks can be unpredictable. “You never know who you are going meet there, whether the dogs are going to be friendly, maybe your dog is anxious, or it doesn’t deal well with other types of dogs.”

The Tararua District Dog Control Bylaw 2022 designates four public areas in Dannevirke where dogs can be exercised off-leash under continuous control: the railway embankment, Stanley St, railway reserve Mangatera, and the Waihipai Domain grassed area opposite the Mangatera Hotel and High St.

Stream Explorer is a child-free zone. Dog owners are responsible for ensuring their dogs are up-to-date on vaccinations and for cleaning up after them.

One dog owner told Mallory it was “the first time in years that she could fully relax with her dog running free.”
