The New Zealand Government is investing more than $800,000 to repair sections of the New Zealand Cycle Trail network following significant storm damage.
- Funding: Over $800,000 for trail repairs and $65,000 for regional marketing.
- Affected Trails: Hauraki Rail Trail, Waikato River Trail, and Tasman’s Great Taste Trail.
- Economic Impact: The 23 Great Rides contribute an estimated $1.28 billion to regional economies annually.
The funding specifically targets three “Great Rides”: the Hauraki Rail Trail, Waikato River Trail, and Tasman’s Great Taste Trail. Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston stated the investment is critical to helping tourism businesses welcome visitors back to the regions.
“Repairing these trails ensures they can continue to drive regional tourism, support local businesses, and provide high‑quality outdoor recreation experiences,” Upston said.
Regional Recovery and Marketing Support
In addition to infrastructure repairs, the government has approved marketing funds to rebuild visitor confidence in the upper North Island following severe weather in January. This includes $55,000 for Hauraki-Coromandel and $10,000 for the Bay of Plenty.
Upston highlighted the scale of the network, noting that more than two million people use the 23 Great Rides of Ngā Haerenga New Zealand Cycle Trails every year.
The Minister described the trails as a long‑standing partnership between central government, local government, and hosting communities, adding that the current investment reinforces that commitment.
