Posidonia australis Spans 77 Square Miles as Largest Plant on Earth

Spanning an astonishing 77 square miles in Western Australia’s shallow Shark Bay, Posidonia australis stands as the largest known plant on Earth. According to recent reporting, this sprawling marine meadow was created entirely by a single seedling that cloned itself over the course of roughly 4,500 years.

Nature often builds on a scale that defies ordinary imagination, crafting massive living networks that quietly dominate their environments for millennia. While most people picture giant redwoods or colossal marine mammals when thinking of planetary heavyweights, the true record-holders include sprawling underground colonies, ancient clonal meadows, and singular trees of staggering proportions.

Scientists discovered that this vibrant habitat—which supports numerous marine animals including fishes, dugongs, and turtles—is not a diverse collection of vegetation. Instead, it is a single plant.

The organism achieved its staggering 77-square-mile expanse by cloning itself from a single seedling. Researchers estimate that this monumental plant is 4,500 years old and stretches across 180 kilometers, making it the undisputed largest plant on Earth.

The Humongous Fungus in Malheur National Forest

Deep beneath the soil of Oregon’s Malheur National Forest rests a massive network of honey fungus. Discovered in 1998 following the death of more than 100 trees, this vast organism occupies an area of 2,385 acres, which is the equivalent of roughly 1,500 soccer fields.

This subterranean expanse makes the honey fungus both the largest fungus and the largest single organism on Earth. Much of the organism exists out of sight as mycelium beneath the soil, with fruiting bodies only seasonally popping up above ground, which explains why it remained hidden for so long. Experts estimate the age of this fungal giant to be between 2,400 and 8,650 years.

Pando Quaking Aspen Grove in Fishlake National Forest

Visitors to Utah’s Fishlake National Forest encounter a golden grove that appears to be a traditional forest but is actually a single living organism known as Pando. Each of its estimated 47,000 quaking aspen trunks is connected by one underground root system.

Rather than reproducing through seeds, Pando continuously renews itself by sending new shoots from its underground system. This setup classifies it as a clonal colony where every tree is genetically identical. Spanning 43 hectares and weighing as much as 43 blue whales, experts estimate it could have been growing for almost 9,000 years, surviving since the end of the last Ice Age.

General Sherman Tree and Blue Whale Extremes

The sheer mass of the planet’s largest individual trees and animals highlights different evolutionary strategies for scaling up. In California’s Sequoia National Park, the General Sherman tree towers at almost 84 meters tall—nearly twice the height of the Statue of Liberty in New York. Though it is shorter than the redwood known as Hyperion, its estimated weight of around 1,270,000 kilograms—as heavy as seven blue whales—makes it older than the Roman Empire and one of the largest trees on Earth.

Meanwhile, the blue whale holds the title of the largest animal species to ever live. Growing up to 33 meters long, females can weigh up to 180,000 kilograms. Living in cold ocean waters demands a massive body to prevent excessive heat loss, though a fast metabolism as they grow places a strict biological limit on their maximum size.
