MachineGames and id Software surprised QuakeCon 2026 attendees by releasing Quake: Dawn of the Machine, a free 19-map single-player expansion for the original Quake, arriving right as the legendary shooter celebrates its 30th anniversary.
The 30th-anniversary milestone arrived with an unexpected centerpiece for fans of id Software’s classic shooter. During the opening ceremony of QuakeCon 2026 at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas, developers dropped a brand-new episode for the 1996 title. The release serves as a major draw for the more than 10,000 registered attendees at the four-day convention.
Quake: Dawn of the Machine Breaks From Traditional Hub Design
Built as a collaboration between id Software and MachineGames, Quake: Dawn of the Machine follows hero Ranger as he attempts to escape a dimension of endless illusion
where he has been reliving the same violent cycles for what feels like lifetimes
, according to Bethesda’s official description. Escaping requires confronting and breaking the Nightmare Machine.

Players carry health, ammunition, and persistent upgrades across the entire 19-level run. The campaign also introduces distinct enemy variants like the Rocket Ogre, Demo Dog, and Blood Shambler, which introduce new behaviours and overwhelming firepower. New additions to the arsenal include the ricochet-blasting Laser Cannon and the lightning-infused Super Axe.
Technical Upgrades and Mapping Mastery in Trenchbroom
The project was crafted by Quake Club, a dedicated group of MachineGames employees who construct maps in their spare time. Reviewers have praised the technical and artistic scope of the release. Digital Foundry declared the episode a masterclass in balance … successfully capturing the essence of Quake while simultaneously showcasing the immense power and flexibility available to modern mappers
.

The team utilized Trenchbroom, an editor enabling map scales that would have been technically impossible on 1990s-era Pentium systems. The episode introduces seamless teleportation to shift player perspectives without breaking continuous movement, along with coloured lightmaps that provide dramatic illumination contrasting sharply with the monochrome limitations of the original release. Advanced Level Designer Christian Plogfors composed a brand-new soundtrack for the episode, giving the campaign a sonic identity separate from both the original Nine Inch Nails score and prior MachineGames add-ons.
Restructuring at id Software Casts a Shadow Over Celebrations
Despite the celebratory atmosphere surrounding the franchise’s landmark anniversary—the original title launched on June 22, 1996—the event takes place against a turbulent backdrop for the studio. Just four weeks before the convention, Microsoft’s Xbox division eliminated roughly 136 jobs at id Software, cutting approximately half of the developer’s workforce.
Industry observers note that the layoffs leave significant questions regarding whether the studio retains the capacity to continue producing full-scale games independently moving forward.
