Remco Evenepoel Claims Stage 15 Victory as Jonas Vingegaard Exits Tour de France
Remco Evenepoel secured a breakthrough victory on the 15th stage of the 2026 Tour de France, triumphing at the first-ever mountain finish on the Plateau de Solaison. The Belgian rider out-sprinted overall leader Tadej Pogacar at the summit, marking a significant milestone in his career. However, the day was defined by a dramatic and consequential crash involving Jonas Vingegaard, which ended the Dane’s pursuit of a third Tour title.
Vingegaard Out Following High-Speed Crash
The race underwent a major shift approximately 21 kilometers from the finish line when Jonas Vingegaard, then second in the general classification, suffered a severe fall at a roundabout. The crash also involved Isaac del Toro, though the Mexican rider was able to continue the race. Tadej Pogacar expressed his disappointment regarding his rival’s departure, noting that the pair had become respectful competitors and friends since their initial duels in 2021. Evenepoel’s Emotional Victory
For Evenepoel, the victory on the 183.9-kilometer stage from Champagnole was his first “classic” road race win at the Tour de France, following two previous stage wins in time trials. The Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe rider, an Olympic gold medalist, described himself as overwhelmed by emotion after crossing the finish line.
I am literally trembling with emotion.
It is simply incredible,
Evenepoel said. I had to realize that I was riding against the best rider of all time.
It is a huge step forward for me that I could follow this pace.
With this result, he has moved into second place in the overall standings, trailing Pogacar by exactly five minutes.
Pogacar Maintains Lead Amidst Controversy
Despite the loss of his main rival, Tadej Pogacar continues to dominate the general classification. The Slovenian rider, who has secured four stage wins in this year’s Tour, finished second on the stage. His performance was particularly notable given that his preparation for the day had been interrupted; Pogacar reported being woken at 5:00 a.m. for an unannounced doping control.
It was definitely not nice to be woken up from sweet dreams,
Pogacar said before the start. I just couldn't get back to sleep.
While Pogacar led the tempo on the final kilometers of the climb, he did not launch a decisive attack, appearing content to cross the line behind Evenepoel.

Stakes for Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe
The stage also saw a shift in the internal dynamics of the Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe team. Florian Lipowitz, who had been a podium hopeful, lost contact with the lead group seven kilometers from the summit and finished the stage in fifth place, 58 seconds behind Evenepoel.
Following the stage, Lipowitz acknowledged that the team’s primary goal remains securing a podium finish in Paris. I am quite happy, and the biggest goal for us is to have someone on the podium, if it goes well, even a second place,
Lipowitz said. I am happy to take a step back myself.
