Ballistic Strikes and Casualties Across Ukrainian Regions

Air raid alerts sounded across most regions of Ukraine as Russian strikes hit residential and non-residential areas. In Kyiv, explosions echoed through the capital, where Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that a few non-residential sites caught fire on the Telegram messaging app. Emergency services confirmed that one person was killed and two others injured in the capital.

The toll was significantly heavier in other regions. In President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih, a direct strike by an Iskander-M ballistic missile launched from Russia’s Voronezh region demolished a private home belonging to a large family. Oleksandr Vilkul, the city’s defence council head, called it a dark night after rescue operations confirmed six deaths, including two girls aged five and 12, alongside eight injuries.

Further west in Lviv, close to the Polish border, rescue workers scrambled through rubble after Russian missiles damaged two apartment buildings, injuring 15 people. Across the Dnipropetrovsk and Poltava regions, regional authorities reported six more fatalities, including two children.

Polish Airspace Defense and the Push for Patriot Licences

The scale of the bombardment prompted neighbouring Poland, a member of the European Union and NATO, to take immediate defensive measures. The Polish armed forces announced on X that fighter aircraft and an early warning aircraft have begun operations while ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems reached a state of readiness.

Polish firefighters secured the site of a 10-metre-wide crater in Tarnawa-Kolonia within the Lublin region of eastern Poland following reports of an explosion, according to Radio Zet. Polish airspace safety became an immediate priority as the strikes unfolded.

The attacks coincided with Zelenskiy’s return from the United States, where he secured agreements from President Donald Trump for licences to acquire Patriot missile systems. Before the bombardment, Zelenskiy warned on Telegram that a massive Russian assault was imminent and argued that civilian survival relied directly on international allies.

Drone Attacks and Supply Chain Disruption Inside Russia

While Ukrainian cities absorbed the missile barrage, Ukrainian drone strikes continued to target industrial and logistical infrastructure within Russia. A warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s top online retailer, caught fire in the western city of Penza following a drone strike, according to regional governor Oleg Melnichenko. One person was injured and approximately 200 workers were evacuated from the site.

The Penza incident occurred just a day after the company evacuated another logistics facility in central Russia. Wildberries announced via Telegram that it has redirected its supply chains following the latest disruption.

The compounding attacks on the retail giant have damaged nearly a dozen Wildberries warehouses recently, destroying approximately 10 per cent of the company’s storage capacity. These logistics losses have strained tens of thousands of small businesses that rely on the platform for their primary source of income.

Financial fallout from the retail strikes has begun rippling through the Russian banking sector. Sberbank, Russia’s largest bank, warned that it may need to increase loan-loss provisions as the ongoing attacks on online retailers and their suppliers impair borrower finances. Meanwhile, the Russian defence ministry reported shooting down a total of 258 drones overnight across Russian territory and Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine.
