Samsung is reportedly developing new audio hardware that will venture into fresh form factors for the company’s accessory lineup. According to GSMArena.com, the tech manufacturer is working on a pair of wireless earbuds featuring an open-ear clip-on design. While similar clip-on styles have been widely adopted by competitors, this design is entirely new for Samsung. Industry tracking suggests the device has circulated under the commercial name Galaxy Buds On, while “Able” has been alleged as their internal codename.
Samsung Expands Beyond Traditional Earbuds With Clip-On Design
Recent leaks featuring illustrations sourced from an unnamed Samsung application have provided a detailed look at the hardware. The leaked assets display the earbuds separately, paired together, and stored inside a matching charging case that features an LED status indicator on the front. Visually, the hardware utilizes a two-piece construction joined by a curved bridge designed to clip around the outer ear. A rounded module sits close to the ear opening with a colored accent along its edge, while a flatter disc-shaped section surrounded by an accent ring rests behind the ear to secure the fit.
The newly surfaced visuals have helped clarify the underlying acoustic technology. Reports from Gadgets 360 indicate that these illustrations discount earlier rumors pointing toward bone-conduction systems. Instead, the Galaxy Buds On are expected to rely on standard air-conduction audio technology. Categorized as Open Wireless Stereo (OWS) earbuds, they likely utilize conventional speaker drivers positioned outside the ear canal to direct sound while enabling users to remain aware of their surrounding environment.
Internal App Leaks Reveal Second Ear-Hook Variant
In addition to the clip-on variant, Samsung is simultaneously preparing a completely separate style of wireless earphones. According to SamMobile, references uncovered behind the scenes reveal that the South Korean firm is developing earbuds equipped with flat ear hooks. These devices carry the internal codename “Buds Canal 5” and are expected to launch under a different commercial designation.
Unlike the open-ear clip-on model, these ear-hook earphones feature a traditional eartip configuration tailored for activities such as workouts and running. Specifications regarding the ear tips remain flexible, as sources note they could utilize either a traditional in-ear tip to supply stronger passive noise isolation or a half in-ear design geared toward a more open, comfortable fit. Hardware expectations for this model also include a charging case equipped with a USB Type-C port, alongside anticipated levels of dust and water resistance and potential support for active noise cancellation.
Market Context and Anticipated Release Timelines
The concurrent development of both the Galaxy Buds On and the “Buds Canal 5” marks a notable strategic shift. As highlighted by Gsmarena, Samsung has traditionally relied exclusively on standard in-ear and semi-in-ear audio products. Entering the open-air clip-on and workout-focused ear-hook markets simultaneously represents a significant diversification for the brand’s audio portfolio.
Competitors have long occupied these alternative spaces. Brands such as Motorola, Huawei, and Bose already sell clip-on alternatives, while companies like JBL, Anker’s Soundcore, and Beats maintain established lines of hook-equipped running earbuds. Although Samsung’s new products were initially speculated to appear alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8 at a recent Galaxy Unpacked event, they did not materialize.
Current projections now point toward an appearance later in the year. Industry watchers suggest both earbud styles could make their official debut alongside the anticipated release of the Galaxy S26 FE in early September.
