Scientists, space agencies, and volunteers are preparing for a total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, when the moon will completely block the sun’s light across parts of Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain, and a small area of northeastern Portugal, according to ESA reports. The rare celestial event marks the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain since 1905, and the first of a series of three solar eclipses the country will observe through 2028. While regions within the 182-mile-wide path of totality will experience a complete blocking of the sun, parts of Europe, Africa, and North America will see a partial eclipse.
Total Solar Eclipse Set to Darken Skies on August 12, 2026
The path of totality stretches approximately 8,300 kilometers, beginning over the Arctic coast around 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time, passing near the North Pole, and continuing toward Greenland, Iceland, Portugal, and northern Spain, as reported by Bgnes. In Greenland, the total phase will last just over two minutes, whereas in northern Spain it may last as little as about 20 seconds depending on atmospheric conditions. Spain will experience the largest area of totality in Europe, with favorable viewing conditions as the eclipse crosses the country from west to east and continues over the Balearic Islands before sunset.
NASA and Space Agencies Deploy Specialized Research Equipment
To capture unprecedented images of the solar corona, Noticias Ambientales states that NASA is deploying its WB-57 research aircraft. Operating at 740 kilometers per hour at an altitude of 15,000 meters (50,000 feet), the aircraft will fly above clouds and atmospheric disturbances to allow continuous observation of nearly three minutes in duration. Kelly Korreck, NASA’s eclipse program manager, noted that the total solar eclipse provides a unique perspective to study how the sun affects life on Earth, from satellites to astronauts. The WB-57 is equipped with the SAMI spectral camera system, visible and infrared spectrum sensors, a gyroscopic-tracking stabilized platform, and spectrometers to analyze solar gas composition.

European space activities are similarly extensive. Carole Mundell, ESA Director of Science, remarked in ESA materials that a total solar eclipse is one of those rare moments when millions of people can look up together and feel both wonder and curiosity.
The European Space Agency is organizing in-person and online activities combining scientific expertise, public engagement, and educational outreach. Stage programs and workshops are planned in León, alongside educational kits available in English and Spanish.
Citizen Scientists and Global Research Initiatives
In addition to institutional research, citizen scientists will play a major role during the August 12 event. According to Space, the Dynamic Eclipse Broadcast (DEB) Initiative will have two teams stationed in the path of totality to observe the eclipse and capture data on the sun’s incandescent atmosphere. Furthermore, as detailed by Newscientist, the public can contribute to five different citizen science projects during the eclipse, ranging from recording shadow bands and photographing Baily’s Beads with smartphones to measuring sky darkening and atmospheric changes using specialized sensor devices.
Experts emphasize safety precautions for viewing the event. Observing the Sun during an eclipse requires special eye protection, and looking directly at the Sun is safe only during the brief total phase when it is completely covered, with specialized solar glasses and filters mandatory at all other times.
