Spain has rejected calls to increase its defense spending to 3.5% of its GDP, a target recently agreed upon by NATO members, and has also canceled a defense contract with Israel. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has characterized the new spending target as “unreasonable.”

Spain Defies Pressure on Defense Spending

While Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and pressure from President Trump prompted NATO members to agree to raise defense spending targets to 3.5% by 2035, the Spanish government has made it clear it has no plans to follow suit. Describing the new target as “unreasonable,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has maintained the country’s current defense budget is sufficient.
