Spencer Matthews Reveals How Drinking Nearly Cost Him His Marriage to Vogue Williams
Former Made in Chelsea star Spencer Matthews has candidly shared how his struggles with alcohol brought his relationship with wife Vogue Williams to a critical point, admitting she likely would have ended the marriage had he not addressed his habits.
The couple, who met in 2017 while competing on the reality show The Jump, quickly became one of the UK’s most beloved celebrity pairings. Their engagement and subsequent marriage in 2018 were followed by the arrival of three children: Theodore, seven, Gigi, five, and Otto, three. However, beneath the public image of marital bliss, Spencer Matthews battled a growing dependence on alcohol that threatened to unravel everything he had built.
Matthews, 37, has previously alluded to the strain his drinking placed on the relationship, describing moments where he feared losing Vogue. Now, in a revealing interview on the On the Mend with Matt Willis podcast, he detailed the specific turning point – Vogue’s pregnancy with their first child, Theodore.
The Impact of Parenthood and Changing Habits
“I was very aware that if I carried on with my drinking and bad habits, that she would get bored, and she would leave me,” Matthews confessed. “And I knew that, and she never made that a thing.” He emphasized that Vogue never issued an ultimatum, but her disappointment was palpable. “She never sat me down and gave me some kind of ultimatum or anything like that. But I could feel it. I could feel that she was a bit disappointed in me.”
The arrival of Theodore marked a significant shift in their dynamic. While previously their social life revolved around shared enjoyment, including alcohol, Vogue’s pregnancy necessitated sobriety. “The light was shone on my boozing when she fell pregnant with our firstborn,” Matthews explained. “What felt like joint fun became solo fun quite quickly because, obviously, she stopped drinking completely.”
This disparity created a “divide” in their relationship, forcing Matthews to confront his own drinking habits. He admitted to initially dismissing Vogue’s concerns, rationalizing his behavior as harmless relaxation. “To begin with, I would say, like, ‘Darling, we’re watching a film, like, of course it’s, like, normal to have a few glasses of red wine’… And she’s like, ‘You’re drinking on your own’. And I’d be like, ‘yeah, because you’re pregnant?’ And she’d be like, ‘Well, because I’m not drinking, do you have to, do you have to drink?’”
Ultimately, it was the realization that he was drinking alone that sparked a period of introspection. “You kind of eventually, you just begin to think, why am I drinking on my own? And you begin to question stuff, perhaps for the first time.”
Matthews clarified that he doesn’t identify as an alcoholic, stating he can now consume alcohol in moderation. However, he acknowledged a past pattern of escalating consumption. “Having one glass would have turned into ten and then I’d be out all night.” He now maintains a largely sober lifestyle, describing a transition “from problem-drinking on a daily basis to having a drink if I feel like it very irregularly.”
He also revealed that his previous career as a trader at ICAP contributed to his drinking culture. “I always had jobs where being able to handle your drink really well was a huge bonus,” he explained. “I was a trader at ICAP, and we would drink five to 10 pints every single day and then take clients out at night and if you couldn’t do that, you wouldn’t get the job, basically.”
The turning point came after a particularly heavy night of drinking alone, leading to a “moment of clarity.” “It’s not like I just fancied giving up drinking. I could have lost you, I could have lost work, I could have died – not to be overly dramatic about it, but that’s the way it was heading.”
Vogue Williams has also publicly addressed the false rumors of a split, firmly dismissing speculation about their marriage. In a passionate Instagram post last year, she expressed her frustration with the persistent and unfounded claims, emphasizing the importance of protecting her children from such negativity.
