A program offering fully-funded STEM training and mentorship to young women from 37 countries is accepting applications through January 20, 2025. The TechGirls program aims to address gender gaps in science, technology, engineering, and math fields by providing opportunities for young women ages 15-17.
TechGirls STEM Exchange Program
Gender gaps in STEM studies are apparent early in life, with girls facing barriers such as unequal access to digital resources and skills. In 20 countries, including many in Sub-Saharan Africa, fewer than 1% of rural young women from the poorest 20% of households complete secondary school. Globally, women comprise only 35% of STEM graduates, resulting in an estimated economic cost of $15-30 trillion due to education gaps.
TechGirls directly addresses these systemic barriers by providing intensive STEM training and mentorship to young women during key career-forming years.
The 2026 program will fully fund 111 positions for women ages 15-17 from across six global regions. The program includes a 23-day experience in the U.S. partnering with Virginia Tech University, followed by seven months of mentorship.
Eligible countries include:
- Sub-Saharan Africa: Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Zambia
- East Asia/Pacific: Cambodia, Fiji, Indonesia, Mongolia, Taiwan, Vietnam
- Europe/Eurasia: Albania, Cyprus, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, Türkiye
- Middle East/North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian Territories, Tunisia
- South/Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan
- Western Hemisphere: Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Suriname
- Plus: United States (13 positions)
Applicants must demonstrate advanced STEM skills and a strong interest in pursuing technology careers, as well as strong English proficiency. All costs are covered, including visa fees, international airfare, housing, meals, transportation, cultural events, and emergency health insurance.
