UK Jewish Security Boost: Bondi Shooting & Antisemitism

British police are increasing security measures in Jewish communities following a terror attack in Bondi Beach, Australia, that left 12 people dead. The heightened security comes as tens of thousands of Jews celebrate Hanukah.

Increased Police Presence

The Metropolitan Police announced an increased presence around synagogues and other Jewish venues in London. While there is no intelligence suggesting an increased threat to the capital, the force acknowledged “significant heightened concern about safety.”

Police Scotland is also mounting patrols around Jewish institutions as part of a Hanukah security plan. Senior officers are consulting with community leaders to discuss additional safety measures in light of the attack in Sydney.

Government and Royal Response

Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the attack on a Hanukah event in Sydney as “sickening,” stating that the government is collaborating with the Community Security Trust. King Charles and Queen Camilla expressed their shock and sadness, calling the attack “the most dreadful antisemitic terrorist attack.”

The King commended the actions of police, emergency services, and members of the public, stating their “heroic actions no doubt prevented even greater horror and tragedy.” He emphasized the resilience of the Australian community and the enduring power of hope over evil.

Concerns Over Rising Antisemitism

Dave Rich, director of policy at a Jewish charity, highlighted a continuing “wave of anti-Jewish hatred” following an attack on a Manchester synagogue in October. He argued that current efforts to combat antisemitism are insufficient.

Rich pointed to incitement and hatred on the streets, citing protests with violent rhetoric where arrests are not being made. He stated that this lack of action leaves Jewish people feeling vulnerable and angry.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews expressed devastation over the Sydney attack and affirmed its collaboration with the UK government on a response. The organization emphasized that terrorism and antisemitism are shared international challenges requiring concerted action.

Cricket Star Witnessed Attack

Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan said he was locked in a restaurant in Bondi Beach as the attack unfolded, describing the situation as “scary.” He thanked emergency services and a bystander who disarmed one of the gunmen, and offered his condolences to those affected.
