The US military launched a “heavy wave” of strikes on Iran in response to an attempted ballistic missile attack on American forces, marking a significant escalation in the region’s conflict. The strikes, which targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) facilities, killed at least three people, including a 2-year-old child, on Qeshm Island, according to Iranian state media.
The US military confirmed it conducted a powerful response
to what it described as an Iranian attack on American forces in the Middle East, targeting military command centers, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defense sites, and maritime capabilities.
The strikes, which began on Wednesday night and lasted about an hour, were part of a broader pattern of escalating tensions between the two nations, which have been locked in a volatile standoff for over five months.
US Launches ‘Heavy’ Strikes on Iran
The operation followed a series of Iranian attacks, including a missile strike on a US airbase in Jordan and attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The US military stated that all Iranian missiles were intercepted, but the strikes nonetheless caused significant damage to Iranian infrastructure.
The BBC cited a US official who described the strikes as a “heavy wave,” emphasizing their scale and intensity. The outlet also reported that Iranian state media claimed the attacks killed three people on Qeshm Island, including a family of three: a father, mother, and their 2-year-old child. The US has not confirmed these casualties, but the strikes were widely reported to have targeted areas central to Iran’s oil industry.
Iran’s Retaliatory Attacks
Iran responded to the US strikes with its own attacks, launching missiles and drones at US military installations in the region. According to RTHK, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted the US Fifth Fleet headquarters and an airbase in a regional country, as well as a vessel it identified as Panaya. The IRGC claimed these actions were in retaliation for what it described as a US attack on an Iranian communications tower near Qeshm Island.
The IRGC also accused the US of disrupting the security of the Strait of Hormuz,
a critical waterway for global oil trade. The group warned that disrupting the security of the Strait of Hormuz will carry a heavy price for the US military.
Meanwhile, the US military reported that two Iranian missiles fired at Kuwait fell short, and three missiles launched at Bahrain were intercepted by US and Bahraini forces.
Drone Incident in the Gulf of Oman
ABC News reported that Iran attempted to shoot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone surveilling the attack on two tankers in the Gulf of Oman. The Iranian military used a modified SA-7 surface-to-air missile, which missed the drone by approximately one kilometer. The drone had previously observed the Front Altair on fire, and the US military confirmed that the attack on the tankers was carried out by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The incident occurred as the US and its allies continued to monitor Iranian activities in the region. The IRGC’s attacks on the Kokuka Courageous and Front Altair tankers, which were damaged by mines, were part of a broader campaign to disrupt maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The US military stated that the IRGC’s actions were a likely attempt to shoot down or otherwise disrupt the MQ-9 surveillance of the IRGC attack.
Escalation and Regional Tensions
The conflict has intensified in recent weeks, with the US and Saudi Arabia conducting joint strikes on Iranian proxies in Iraq. On Tuesday, Centcom reported that these strikes targeted multiple terrorist logistics and weapons sites across eastern Iraq
in response to over 30 IRGC-directed aerial drone attacks. The Iraqi Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), a Shia militia backed by Iran, denounced the strikes as an unacceptable attack and a blatant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty.
The situation remains volatile, with both sides accusing each other of aggression. The US has maintained that its actions are in self-defense, while Iran continues to frame its attacks as retaliation for what it calls American child-killing army
actions. As the conflict enters its sixth month, the risk of further escalation looms large, with regional stability hanging in the balance.
