The next generation of Xbox is poised to redefine console pricing, with credible sources suggesting a launch price of at least £750. This ambitious move by Microsoft signals a clear intent to surpass Sony’s PlayStation 6 in raw processing power, potentially ushering in an era of premium gaming experiences – and premium price tags.
Microsoft officially unveiled Project Helix earlier this year, revealing a console designed to seamlessly integrate PC gaming capabilities. However, details regarding its specifications and, crucially, its cost, have remained largely shrouded in secrecy – until now.
The Rising Cost of Cutting-Edge Gaming
The prospect of a £750 Xbox isn’t emerging from a vacuum. Former Xbox president Sarah Bond previously described the upcoming console as a “very premium, very high-end curated experience” (Metro). Initial speculation, fueled by leaks, even suggested a price exceeding £1,000 (Metro), though many analysts considered that figure unsustainable for maintaining market competitiveness.
Inside the Price Tag: A Deep Dive
Now, industry analyst and YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead is adding further clarity to the situation. Known for accurate predictions regarding the PS5 Pro and Nintendo Switch 2, Moore’s Law Is Dead suggests Project Helix will leverage technology comparable to AMD’s next-generation 9070 XT graphics card. Coupled with a global RAM shortage, this advanced hardware is driving up production costs.
“I have a document that directly says AMD wants their successor to the 9070 XT, that uses the RDNA5 AT2 die,” Moore’s Law Is Dead explained in a recent video. “AMD has directly said in a document they’re targeting $550. Now, who knows what that really means, where prices will be, maybe that’ll end up being $650 next year.”
He continued, outlining the escalating costs: “But if the graphics card itself, which uses the same chiplet [Helix] uses and uses the same type of RAM, is – let’s say it’s $600 – well, then what? You need to add more RAM for the Xbox. Alright, well, what would that really be? Like, another $200 there. Then the CPU die for Xbox is more expensive than obviously the output die that would be in the graphics card. But even then, you know, it’s not that big of a die. Even though its 3nm, another $100.”
According to his analysis, even at mass production scale, Microsoft could be looking at a cost of around $900 to manufacture Project Helix. To achieve even a modest profit margin, the retail price is likely to exceed $1,000 (£749).
For context, the most expensive version of the current Xbox Series X (2TB) retails for £590 in the UK. A jump to £800 or higher would represent a significant investment for gamers, potentially targeting a more affluent demographic. Will Microsoft’s new leadership (Metro) adjust its pricing strategy to remain competitive?
While Moore’s Law Is Dead anticipates the PlayStation 6 will be less powerful than Project Helix, a price estimate for Sony’s next-gen console remains elusive. However, it’s widely expected to be cheaper, though the extent of that difference remains a key question. Currently, the PS5 Pro costs £700, suggesting the PS6 will likely exceed that price point unless Sony implements cost-cutting measures.
Adding another layer of complexity is Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine, slated for release later this year. If it offers a more affordable entry point for PC gaming on the television, it could potentially siphon demand away from the next Xbox.
Do you think a £750+ Xbox is a justifiable price for a significant leap in gaming performance? And how will the emergence of the Steam Machine impact the console market?
Elsewhere in his analysis, Moore’s Law Is Dead also discussed his reasoning for believing the PlayStation 6 will launch in late 2027, despite ongoing memory shortages (Metro).
Frequently Asked Questions About the Next Xbox
What is the expected release date for the next Xbox?
While a firm release date hasn’t been announced, industry analysts predict a launch in late 2026 or early 2027, aligning with the anticipated release of the PlayStation 6.
How will the Xbox Project Helix differ from the current Xbox Series X?
Project Helix is expected to offer significantly improved processing power, enabling higher resolutions, faster frame rates, and more complex game worlds. It will also natively support PC game titles.
Could the price of the next Xbox impact its sales?
Absolutely. A price point of £750 or higher could limit the console’s appeal to a niche market of dedicated gamers willing to pay a premium for cutting-edge technology.

Valve’s Steam Machine is a PC-based gaming device designed for the living room. It offers an alternative way to play PC games on a TV, potentially at a lower price point than the next Xbox.
What factors are contributing to the increased cost of the next Xbox?
The primary drivers of cost are the advanced AMD graphics card, a global RAM shortage, and the use of a 3nm manufacturing process for the CPU.
Will the PlayStation 6 be more affordable than the next Xbox?
Industry expectations suggest the PlayStation 6 will be cheaper than Project Helix, but the exact price difference remains unknown.
