Researchers have named a newly discovered genus of rove beetles Luffy
after the rubber-bodied protagonist of the manga series One Piece, noting that the insects’ exceptionally long mandibles, antennae, and mouthparts mirror the fictional character’s stretchable form. The taxonomic descriptions were published in the peer-reviewed journal ZooKeys.
When taxonomy and pop culture collide, the results are rarely as anatomically fitting as a new insect genus named after one of anime’s most recognizable heroes. Scientists have introduced the genus Luffy, drawing inspiration from Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist of Eiichiro Oda’s long-running series. While the name might initially read as a playful nod for fans, researchers emphasize that the nomenclature is rooted directly in the physical traits of the specimens themselves.
Anatomy That Inspired the Luffy Beetle Genus
According to research published in ZooKeys, members of the newly established genus possess mouthparts, antennae, and mandibles that are significantly longer and more slender than those of related rove beetles. Those elongated proportions immediately brought to mind the fictional character’s ability to stretch his limbs after consuming the Gum-Gum Fruit. The authors clarified that the generic name refers strictly to these extended body parts rather than the character’s personality or backstory.
So far, scientists have identified two distinct species within the genus. The first, Luffy schillhammeri, was discovered in the broadleaf forests of Yunnan Province in south-west China. Its species name honors Dr. Harald Schillhammer of the Natural History Museum Vienna for his extensive contributions to rove beetle taxonomy. The second species, Luffy nika, was found in Louang Namtha in northern Laos. Its species name references Luffy’s legendary Devil Fruit awakening, known as Gear 5 or Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika

Filling an Evolutionary Gap in the Eucibdelus Lineage
Beyond the anime-inspired moniker, the discovery addresses a serious taxonomic mystery. PhD student Fang-Shuo Hu and Alexey Solodovnikov of the Natural History Museum of Denmark conducted a broad review of known genera within the Ocypus group, alongside several branches whose positions in the beetle family tree remained uncertain or controversial, such as Acupronotes, Apostenolinus, and Staphylinus. By examining numerous museum specimens and comparing subtle anatomical structures, the researchers re-evaluated how these groups are related.

The team identified the shared derived characteristics that define the Eucibdelus lineage, including dorsal ridge teeth on the left mandible and a completely sclerotized labrum. While the new beetles possess those dorsal ridge teeth, their labrum is not completely sclerotized. That mixed set of traits places the insects in an intermediate position, leading the researchers to conclude that Luffy is likely the sister group to the entire Eucibdelus lineage.
Bringing Taxonomy Closer to the Public
Beetles represent one of the most diverse groups of animals on Earth, with roughly 400,000 formally described species and hundreds of thousands more remaining undocumented. By connecting a newly identified genus to a globally recognized pop culture franchise, the research team hopes to spark wider public interest in biological taxonomy. The discovery demonstrates how rigorous scientific work can intersect with creative storytelling to raise awareness for biodiversity research.
