Indiana authorities investigated a complex case of attempted murder and ultimately, a suicide, stemming from a plot to poison a man for financial gain. The case, involving Marsha Allen and her daughter Ashley Jones, unfolded after a burglary at Marsha Allen’s home led investigators to uncover a series of disturbing text messages detailing a plan to kill Marsha’s husband, Harold Allen.
Harold Allen’s Mysterious Illness
Harold Allen, 52, died in December 2022 after experiencing a series of unexplained health issues. Initially, doctors suspected diverticulitis, but his condition worsened in the weeks leading up to his death. His brother, Matthew Allen, recalled Harold mentioning numbness on one side of his face shortly before his death.
The Burglary and Initial Investigation
In September 2023, Marsha Allen’s home was burglarized. Security footage revealed one of the burglars was Steven White, identified as Ashley Jones’s best friend. During questioning, White shockingly claimed Marsha Allen had poisoned Harold Allen with a root beer float, alleging Ashley Jones was involved.
Damning Text Messages Reveal the Plot
Investigators obtained thousands of text messages between Marsha and Ashley Allen, revealing a detailed plot to kill Harold Allen. The messages discussed ordering various poisons, including Pong Pong seeds, ethylene glycol (antifreeze), and water hemlock, and detailed attempts to administer them through food and drinks.
The Poisoning Attempts
The texts revealed multiple attempts to poison Harold Allen, including poisoned brownies, chili, Sprite, and a root beer float. Ashley Jones ordered ethylene glycol online, and Marsha Allen purchased ingredients for the fatal root beer float. Marsha texted Ashley about the float, and Ashley responded with encouragement.
Marsha Allen’s Suicide and Ashley Jones’s Confession
After being questioned by police and learning that Harold Allen’s blood was being retested for poisons, Marsha Allen died by suicide. Before her death, she left a note stating, “I did not kill my husband. You win Ashley!” Ashley Jones subsequently confessed to her role in the plot, admitting she helped her mother purchase the poisons and even provided a key to the house and the safe combination.
Charges and Sentencing
Ashley Jones was arrested and charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Steven White received a three-and-a-half-year sentence for his role in the burglary.
Investigation into Ty Jones’s Death
Following the conclusion of the Harold Allen case, investigators reopened the investigation into the 2019 death of Ashley Jones’s previous husband, Ty Jones, who died of what was initially ruled as heart complications. Family members have long suspected foul play, and the discovery of text messages referencing Ty’s weight during the planning of Harold’s murder has raised further questions.
