August 2026 brings a rare alignment of celestial events, headlined by a total solar eclipse on August 12. Daytime darkness will descend across the Iberian Peninsula near sunset, alongside slivers of Greenland and Iceland, as the sun, moon, and Earth align perfectly, according to apnews.com reports. For mainland Spain, it marks the first total solar eclipse in more than a century.
Total Solar Eclipse Crosses the Globe on August 12
The path of totality also crosses northern Russia, Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain, and a small corner of Portugal NASA noted. By the time the shadow reaches a small patch of Portugal and Spain, totality will last about a minute or so before ending in the Mediterranean. Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of people outside the path of totality will experience a partial eclipse, stretching as far away as Alaska and Siberia, as well as Canada, the northern U.S., and much of Europe and West Africa. Coverage will vary by location, with parts of the U.S. seeing a partial eclipse, while locations such as Montreal will see an 18% bite out of the sun, tapering to 9% in New York and 2% in Norfolk, Virginia.
Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Under Dark Skies
Adding to the celestial calendar, the Perseid meteor shower will peak on the night of August 12 into the early morning hours of August 13. Because a New Moon arrives on August 12, stargazers will benefit from ideally dark skies. Observers may see 50 or more meteors near the peak mornings in a dark sky as Earth passes through a debris stream left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle.
The day of the eclipse also features a rare planetary arrangement, with six neighboring planets forming an arc in the sky before dawn. Organizations including NASA, the apnews.com, and the Italian-based Virtual Telescope Project plan to provide live webcasts and coverage of the eclipse events.
Deep Partial Lunar Eclipse Closes Out the Month
The month of astronomical highlights concludes with a partial lunar eclipse on the night of August 27, continuing into August 28 for some time zones. Visible from much of North and South America and parts of Europe and Africa, the event occurs when the Full Moon slips through Earth’s shadow.

At maximum eclipse, about 93% of the moon’s diameter will be inside the earth’s dark central shadow, known as the umbra. While the moon will not be completely covered, it can take on a dramatic, rusty, coppery tint along the covered edge. Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to watch with the naked eye.
Essential Safety and Viewing Guidelines
Astronomers and space agencies emphasize strict eye safety protocols for observing the solar phase. Special certified eclipse glasses or safe solar filters attached to the front optics of cameras, binoculars, or telescopes are required whenever any part of the sun remains visible. Regular sunglasses do not provide adequate protection against eye injury or equipment damage.
