George and Amal Clooney were evacuated from their home in Brignoles, France, after a 130-hectare wildfire forced hundreds of residents to flee.
Evacuation Order Issued as Wildfires Sweep the Var Department
A fast-moving wildfire in the Var department forced authorities to evacuate 600 people from their homes south-east of Brignoles. The blaze, which scorched 130 hectares, began on Wednesday afternoon and prompted widespread emergency measures as firefighters battled difficult conditions. Among those displaced from their primary residence were George Clooney, his wife Amal Clooney, and their nine-year-old twins.
The family had established their main residence at the Domaine de Canadel in Brignoles after acquiring French citizenship in December following their permanent relocation to the area, where their children attend local schools. This luxurious villa has served as the family’s primary residence since 2025, according to USA Today. As the flames advanced, local emergency services mobilized heavily to contain the disaster.
According to reports from the scene, the firefighting effort involved 270 firefighters working alongside four water-bombing helicopters and a command helicopter. The intense struggle against the blaze resulted in injuries to four firefighters who were hurt while fighting the fire since Wednesday afternoon.
Letter to Mayor Didier Brémond Pledges Community Reconstruction
While retreating from the disaster zone, the actor and his wife reached out to the local administration. They transmitted a personal letter of support to Didier Brémond, the mayor of Brignoles, which was consulted by several media outlets including BFMTV and People. In the correspondence, the 65-year-old Oscar-winning actor and his wife shared their anxiety about the fate of their property while shifting the primary focus to the safety of local residents.
In the translated correspondence consulted by multiple media outlets including People magazine and BFMTV, the actor emphasized their deep connection to the region and their four years of living in the commune. The couple noted that regardless of what happened to their personal property, they intended to remain active participants in the community’s future and contribute to its reconstruction.

George and Amal Clooney stated through Le HuffPost that first, they hoped he and the residents of their town were safe.
The correspondence included the exact lines: « Cher Didier, à ce stade, nous ne savons pas si notre belle maison survivra à ce terrible moment » as written by the famous couple, and added: « Alors que nous évacuons Brignoles, nous tenons à souligner deux choses : premièrement, nous espérons que vous et les habitants de notre ville êtes en sécurité ; deuxièmement, Amal et moi sommes déterminés à faire en sorte que, quoi qu’il arrive à notre village, nous restions pleinement intégrés à cette communauté et que nous contribuions à sa reconstruction ». The letter concluded with a reaffirmation of their affection for the area, stating simply that George and Amal Clooney, via documentation reviewed by media sources, loved Brignoles and the friends who lived there.
Containment Status and Ongoing Recovery Operations
Emergency responders managed to bring the fire under control during the night between Wednesday and Thursday, as announced Thursday morning by firefighters and the prefecture. A spokesperson for the firefighters confirmed to AFP on Thursday morning that the fire no longer progressed, though crews remained active on the ground to handle remaining hazards.
Authorities reported that teams still had 10 kilometers of perimeter edge to treat as of Thursday morning to ensure the area remained secure, with 270 firefighters still mobilized on site alongside four water-bombing helicopters and a command helicopter.
