Appointed in November 2021 shortly after a consortium spearheaded by Amanda Staveley completed its takeover, Howe rescued the Magpies from relegation trouble and ultimately delivered the club’s first major trophy in 70 years by winning the EFL Cup in March 2025.
Howe’s departure followed discussions with the club’s hierarchy over a 48-hour period, according to Sky Sports reporting cited across multiple outlets. In a farewell message, Howe stated that he felt it was in the best interests of both himself and the club to step away, recharge, and take a break after giving his heart and soul to the position.

To navigate the post-Howe transition, Newcastle turned to Matthias Jaissle, securing his release from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli. While Jaissle joined up with his new players at their pre-season training camp in La Manga, southern Spain, the official announcement was delayed while Al-Ahli finalized paperwork regarding the departure of a coach they were reluctant to lose. ESPN reported that Newcastle paid significant compensation in excess of £9 million ($12m), while Sky Sports cited a similar figure, to tie the 38-year-old German down to a four-year contract.
Club executives expressed strong confidence in the appointment. Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson noted that Jaissle emerged as the clear candidate following a thorough and confidential recruitment process. Sporting director Ross Wilson added that the manager’s leadership style and high-energy philosophy strongly align with the club’s sporting vision.

Pedigree at RB Salzburg and Al-Ahli
Jaissle arrives on Tyneside with a notable track record within the Red Bull coaching system and overseas. After managing Red Bull Salzburg’s under-18 academy and FC Liefering, he took charge of Salzburg in July 2021 at just 33 years of age. In his first season, he secured a domestic double and guided the club to the UEFA Champions League knockout stage for the first time in its history, subsequently adding a second Austrian Bundesliga title.
In the summer of 2023, Jaissle moved to the Saudi Pro League to manage Al-Ahli. Despite taking over a newly promoted side, he led them to back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite titles in 2025 and 2026, alongside winning the Saudi Super Cup in 2025.
