Nintendo released two previously unreleased Virtual Boy games, Zero Racers and D-Hopper, on August 4, 2026. Available for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 users via the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, these titles were originally scheduled for 1996 releases before being canceled due to the hardware’s commercial failure.
The Virtual Boy has always been the outlier in Nintendo’s history, a console that stopped releasing games in less than a year. But as of today, the library is expanding. The arrival of Zero Racers and D-Hopper represents a rare moment of digital archaeology, bringing “completed” projects to the public three decades after they were shelved.
Zero Racers and D-Hopper: Resurrecting 1996’s Lost Projects
Both titles were slated for release in 1996. Zero Racers, originally known as G-Zero, is a futuristic racing spin-off based on the F-Zero series. According to a former Nintendo staff member cited by Video Games Chronicle, the game was completed
but never saw a commercial launch. It would have been the first 3D entry in the series and introduced characters like Jody Summer and James McCloud well before they appeared in F-Zero X on the Nintendo 64.
The gameplay is set in a future approaching the 30th century, where humans live underground. Players pilot floating machines through square ducts over five laps, using speed boosts called “Rapid” to maintain a qualifying position. The game features two distinct modes: Grand Prix for circuit racing and Practice for solo runs.
D-Hopper, also known as Dragon Hopper, comes from the Fire Emblem developer Intelligent Systems. It is an action-adventure title described as being in the vein of The Legend of Zelda series. The plot follows Prince Dorin of the Sky Kingdom, who is cast underground by a rebellious minister named Rexxar. Players navigate floating platforms by jumping and flapping, eventually rescuing four spirits to transform into a dragon with special abilities.
. You compete for position by driving a floating machine around a course made up of connected square ducts for 5 laps. You must maintain a position within the specified range each lap, and if you finish in the top 3, you can advance to the next course.

Virtual Boy App Updates and Hardware Accessories
The launch of these games coincides with the Version 1.3.0 service update for the Virtual Boy app. The most significant addition is a screen color customization feature, allowing players to move beyond the console’s iconic red visuals. To activate this, users must press and hold the right control stick while using the L and R buttons to cycle through colors.
This ecosystem, which launched on February 17, 2026, has now integrated the majority of the original Virtual Boy library.
Super Mario Sunshine and GameCube Expansion
While the Virtual Boy is the focus today, Nintendo is also preparing a major GameCube addition. Super Mario Sunshine will join the Nintendo Classics library on August 13, 2026. This is a significant move for accessibility; since the delisting of the 3D All-Stars collection in March 2021, the platformer has been difficult to play on modern hardware.
It is important to note a hardware restriction: Super Mario Sunshine and other GameCube titles in the Nintendo Classics library are exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2. Players will also need the beefier Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription to access these titles.
The Remaining Virtual Boy Gap
Despite the addition of Zero Racers and D-Hopper, the “complete” Virtual Boy collection remains elusive. Several titles have yet to be confirmed for the service, and their inclusion is unlikely due to the complexities of licensed intellectual properties.

Beyond the games, Nintendo is integrating the system’s legacy into other apps. A new trailer titled Enter the Third Dimension
highlighted the latest releases, and five soundtracks—including Virtual Boy Wario Land and Mario’s Tennis—have been added to the Nintendo Music app.
