OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has apologized for the company’s failure to warn authorities about the concerning online activities of a teenager who later committed one of Canada’s worst mass shootings. The apology follows revelations regarding the company’s OpenAI failure to warn authorities about a user flagged for violent misuse.

  • Account Suspension: OpenAI flagged and suspended the shooter’s account in June for misuse “in furtherance of violent activities.”
  • Failure to Report: The company did not alert law enforcement, claiming the activity did not meet the threshold of an imminent threat.
  • Casualties: The February 10 attack in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, left eight people dead.

The Tumbler Ridge Tragedy

On February 10, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar carried out a shooting spree in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The attack resulted in the deaths of eight people, including five secondary school students and Rootselaar’s mother and half-brother.

Rootselaar, who was born male but identified as female, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound following the attacks.

OpenAI’s Response and Failure to Report

OpenAI disclosed that Rootselaar’s ChatGPT account had been internally flagged for misuse “in furtherance of violent activities” the previous June. This discovery led to the immediate suspension of the account.

The San Francisco-based company stated it did not inform law enforcement at the time because the chatbot usage had not met the threshold of posing a credible or imminent threat of harm to others.

Public Apology and Future Commitments

In a letter shared by British Columbia Premier David Eby and the Tumbler RidgeLines news site, Sam Altman acknowledged that OpenAI should have alerted law enforcement to the suspension.

“I am deeply sorry that we did not alert law enforcement to the account that was banned in June,” Altman wrote. “While I know words can never be enough, I believe an apology is necessary to recognize the harm and irreversible loss your community has suffered.”

The statement follows previous discussions between Altman, Premier Eby, and Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka regarding the community’s anger and sadness. Altman reaffirmed his commitment to working with all levels of government to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
