Rey Mysterio announced via a video on WWE’s social channels that World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns will defend his title on September 14, 2026, in the main event of Monday Night Raw at Arena CDMX in Mexico City. The broadcast marks the first time WWE has aired Raw from Mexico in more than fifteen years.
The announcement follows a brief backstage interaction between Reigns and Mysterio on the August 3 episode of Raw. After Reigns walked away from LA Knight, Mysterio approached The OTC in Gorilla to discuss a proposition. That conversation laid the groundwork for Mysterio’s meeting with Raw General Manager Adam Pearce and Reigns, securing the champion’s agreement to put his title on the line in Mexico.
“On September 14, Monday Night RAW makes history when we broadcast live from Arena Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico for the first time in 15 years. Now, I’m not just the RAW superstar, I’m also the general manager of AAA. And that’s why earlier this week, I spoke with RAW general manager Adam Pearce and The OTC, Roman Reigns. Roman recognized how important Lucha Libre is to me, and how important this night is. And that’s why he has agreed to defend the World Heavyweight Championship that night on RAW.”

Mysterio detailed that a tournament featuring top luchadores from Raw, SmackDown, and AAA will determine the official challenger. The competition begins on Monday, August 10, on Raw from Norfolk, Virginia.
While WWE has not yet released the official bracket, field size, or complete list of entrants, promotional video packages have pointed toward several elite competitors. Penta stands out as a primary name to watch, entering the tournament fresh off a successful 152-day reign as Intercontinental Champion. Additional potential participants mentioned in early industry discussions include Dragon Lee, Mr. Iguana, Dominik Mysterio, Rey Fenix, and Pagano.
TripleMania and Arena CDMX Schedule Overlap
The Mexico City title match serves as the centerpiece of a massive weekend for lucha libre, coinciding directly with AAA’s TripleMania 34 events. Night one of TripleMania takes place on Friday, September 11, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. SmackDown will also run Arena CDMX on Friday, September 11.
Night two follows on Sunday, September 13, at Arena CDMX in Mexico City—the exact same venue that will host Monday Night Raw the following night.
