Russia-Ukraine War Live Updates: Zelensky Holds Urgent Calls as Trump Cranks Pressure

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán welcomed a new U.S. national security strategy that warns of “civilizational erasure” in Europe due to migration and advocates for a strategic reset with Russia, aligning with core beliefs of the right-wing leader.

Orbán Welcomes U.S. National Security Strategy

Orbán, a long-time ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump, called the strategy “the most important and most interesting document of recent years” in a post on X. He is currently facing a re-election battle in 2026.

The U.S. strategy sharply criticizes European economic policy, citing overregulation, and democratic backsliding, particularly regarding freedom of speech. It also outlines a policy of actively supporting opposition to the European Union among allies in countries like Hungary, Poland, and Austria.

According to Orbán, the Americans “also see that Europe has hit the wall of a long economic dead end,” and that a “weak ally cannot defend itself and cannot be relied upon in international affairs.”

The strategy acknowledges what Orbán described as a “civilisational crisis” in Europe, stating that European values, democracy, and the free market are “all in danger.” He added that the U.S. assessment recognizes that severing ties with Russia was a mistake and that a relationship with Russia “needs to be rebuilt at a strategic level.”

“In summary: America has a precise understanding of Europe’s decline,” Orbán stated. “They see the civilisational-scale decline that we in Hungary have been fighting against for fifteen years. At last, we are not fighting against it alone.”

EU leaders have rejected the strategy’s characterizations of European problems, asserting their ability to manage internal affairs, including the state of their democracies.
