Tauranga dog attack victims upset council won’t reveal what happened to attacker

A Tauranga, New Zealand couple’s dog was attacked by another dog while they were walking in the Mission Cemetery, prompting questions about enforcement of the Dog Control Act and the transparency of local authorities.

Dog Attack at Mission Cemetery

The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, reported the incident to Tauranga City Council after their cavoodle suffered a deep bite wound to its back and head. The attack occurred when a dog burst from a parked vehicle with a covered trailer.

The husband attempted to intervene, trying to separate the dogs, but the attacking dog continued its assault. The owner of the attacking dog reportedly tried to wrestle the dog off their pet, punching and yelling during the struggle. Two other dogs inside the trailer “barked loudly and aggressively” during the attack.

The couple’s dog required $350 in veterinary treatment, including antibiotics and pain relief. They stated their dog was registered, on a lead, and had never shown aggression.

Council Investigation and Response

Tauranga City Council animal control responded to the complaint and seized the attacking dog. The couple were informed the dog had a prior history and was unregistered, leading them to believe this wasn’t an isolated incident.

The couple requested the attacking dog be classified as dangerous, but were later informed by the council that details regarding the outcome and the dog’s status could not be disclosed due to the Privacy Act. They expressed frustration at the lack of information, stating they felt victims were not being afforded the same rights as lawbreakers.

Tauranga City Council animal services team leader Oscar Glossop acknowledged the upsetting nature of the incident and confirmed an investigation was conducted and “appropriate action” taken under the Dog Control Act. However, he reiterated that the Privacy Act prevents the release of personal information.

Glossop stated the council’s actions are guided by the law, with community safety as the primary focus, and that they are confident the most appropriate steps have been taken.

The incident comes as the Government recently ordered a full review of the Dog Control Act.
