The US Department of Justice announced that a 27-month prison sentence was issued against a soldier in the US Navy after he was convicted of spying for China.

The ministry said in a statement that Wening Zhao (26 years old) was a soldier at the naval base in Ventura County (northwest of Los Angeles) and was arrested in August in California.

She added that he pleaded guilty in October to selling sensitive information to a Chinese intelligence official, explaining that in addition to the prison sentence, the convict was also fined $5,500.

The statement quoted Larissa Knapp, acting deputy director of the FBI’s National Security Division, as saying: “The People’s Republic of China is engaged in an aggressive campaign to undermine the national security of the United States and its partners.”

The convicted soldier admitted that, between August 2021 and May 2023, he received nearly $15,000 from a Chinese intelligence agent in exchange for sensitive information about operational security, military training, and vital infrastructure for the US Navy, according to what the ministry added in its statement.
