In a stunning display of philanthropic commitment, MacKenzie Scott has announced donations totaling $7.2 billion for 2025, bringing her six-year giving spree to over $26 billion. The scale of Scott’s generosity continues to reshape the landscape of charitable giving, positioning her as one of the most impactful philanthropists of our time.
MacKenzie Scott’s Giving Surges to $7.2 Billion in 2025
Scott, who amassed her fortune through her former marriage to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, revealed the latest figures in a blog post, emphasizing the collective power of giving rather than focusing solely on large-scale donations. Her approach, characterized by unsolicited grants and recipient autonomy, stands in stark contrast to traditional philanthropic models. This year’s contribution significantly surpasses her previous annual giving of $2.6 billion in 2024 and $2.1 billion in 2023, demonstrating an accelerating commitment to her 2019 pledge to donate the majority of her wealth.
“This dollar total will likely be reported in the news, but any dollar amount is a vanishingly tiny fraction of the personal expressions of care being shared into communities this year,” Scott wrote. She highlighted the substantial contributions made by everyday donors, noting that nearly a third of all charitable donations in the U.S. in 2020 were under $5,000.
A Focus on Unrestricted Funding and Long-Term Impact
What sets MacKenzie Scott’s philanthropy apart isn’t just the magnitude of her gifts, but how she gives. Unlike many large donors who stipulate specific uses for their funds, Scott provides unrestricted grants, allowing organizations to determine how best to allocate resources to meet their needs. This approach has been lauded by recipients, with a recent study by the Center for Effective Philanthropy finding that nearly 90% of organizations reported improved long-term financial sustainability as a result of Scott’s donations. The median grant size was $5 million.
Of the nearly 200 organizations supported in 2025, approximately 120 received repeat funding, indicating Scott’s commitment to building long-term relationships with impactful organizations. The largest single grant, totaling $90 million, went to Forests, People, Climate (FPC), a collaborative effort dedicated to reversing tropical deforestation. This substantial investment brings FPC’s total funding to over $1 billion. “Now is the time for climate philanthropy to take action with vision and courage: to embrace the potential of forests and back the bold leaders best suited to protect them,” stated Lindsey Allen, FPC’s executive director.
Education and Environmental Causes Lead the Way
Scott’s 2025 giving demonstrated a clear prioritization of education and environmental sustainability. A significant 18% of the total funds were directed towards educational initiatives, including substantial contributions to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). She donated $70 million each to UNCF and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and $63 million each to Prairie View A&M University, Morgan State University, and Howard University. Further support was provided to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and Native Forward Scholars Fund, receiving $70 million and $50 million respectively.
Beyond education, environmental organizations also benefited significantly. The second-largest donation went to Ocean Resilience & Climate Alliance, and a considerable portion of the funds were allocated to organizations focused on economic security, funding and regranting, equity and justice, democratic processes, health, and arts and culture.
