Two people were killed and one wounded in a shooting in Ravensmead, South Africa on Sunday night while walking to a local shop. Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the incident, while two others remain at large.
Ravensmead Shooting Leaves Two Dead
Chelsea “Lilly” Matthyse, 22, and Ashlin Petersen, 19, were fatally shot when a white Toyota Etios with four occupants opened fire on them on Anamone Street at approximately 8:34 p.m. A 20-year-old male survived the shooting and is receiving medical treatment.
Family members of Ashlin Petersen stated that the shooters were specifically targeting him. A relative described the attack as excessive, saying, “You don’t even kill an animal like that. It’s like they emptied their gun on him.” The relative added that Petersen had been leading a quiet life, focusing on odd jobs and spending time near the shop.
Family of Chelsea Matthyse expressed shock and grief, stating she was not involved in any wrongdoing. They reported hearing gunshots and later discovering she had been shot, and even shot again while lying on the ground.
Police responding to the scene, part of the Ravensmead SAPS Crime Prevention Unit, heard gunshots and pursued the white Toyota Etios. Occupants of the vehicle allegedly fired at the officers during the chase.
Officers stopped the vehicle on De La Rey Road, resulting in two arrests. Two suspects fled the scene and remain at large. A magazine containing 17 nine mm rounds was found inside the vehicle.
Two men, aged 26 and 30, have been arrested and will appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court. The motive is believed to be gang-related, and the investigation is ongoing.
