A driver died Tuesday evening after a vehicle went over a bank on State Highway 2 north of Napier. This death marks the first road fatality in the country during the Christmas holiday period and the second in the Hawke’s Bay region.
State Highway 2 Crash
Police confirmed the driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene of the crash. The incident occurred approximately 11.45 a.m. on Tuesday.
State Highway 2 was closed for several hours north of Tangoio Settlement Rd while emergency crews worked to extract the person from the vehicle. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency closed the highway north of Whirinaki, with the crash site located about 11km away, near White Pine Bush Scenic Reserve.
The death brings the total road toll in the Hawke’s Bay and Tararua regions to 23 for 2025.
