UNESCO urges turning environmental education into an essential component of the school curriculum

In a new study published ahead of the World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development, to be held online from Berlin (Germany) from 17 to 19 May, UNESCO urges that environmental education be transformed into an essential component of the school curricula of all countries by 2025.

A new study by the organization said that the education sector does not provide students with a sufficient amount of knowledge that provides them with the ability to adapt to climate change and environmental crises, respond to them, and take the necessary measures regarding them.

The Learning for Our Planet study analyzed educational plans and curriculum frameworks in nearly 50 countries across all regions and found that more than half of these plans and curricula do not address climate change, while only 19% do.

The study indicates a lack of attention to social and emotional skills and action-oriented competencies, which are essential for environmental and climate action.

The study included an online survey with the participation of nearly 1,600 teachers and leaders in the field of education.

The survey indicated that a third of participants indicated that teacher training programs do not address issues related to the environment.

Therefore, UNESCO has set a new goal, according to the study, which is to transform environmental education into an essential component of the school curricula of all countries by 2025.

The organization works with its 193 member states to support school curriculum reform and track progress in this area, in order to ensure that everyone acquires the knowledge, skills, values ​​and behaviors needed to create positive change and protect the future of our planet.

The global conference will include approximately 2,500 participants, including more than 81 education ministers and leading actors committed to transforming education so that all learners can address the climate crisis, diminishing biodiversity and other challenges related to sustainable development. The conference aims to develop strategies to integrate education for sustainable development into education and training programs at various levels, in line with a new framework for action.

The conference sessions, which will be held over three days, will focus on the best ways to harness education to address interconnected global challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, green and circular economies, technological progress, and harnessing education to establish interactive relationships with nature, characterized by With the ability to adapt. It will examine ways to strengthen the capacities of educators, empower youth and take local measures through education for sustainable development.

All participants will be called upon to commit to the Berlin Declaration on Education for Sustainable Development, which will outline a set of policies covering education, learning, vocational training and civic engagement.

In preparation for this conference, people participated in a global campaign launched by UNESCO to call for a change in education so that we can all #LearnForOurPlanet, and secure our survival and the future of life on Earth.
