US Vice President Kamala Harris will visit South Korea on the 29th after attending Prime Minister Abe’s funeral in Japan to meet with President Yoon Seok-yeol.
A senior U.S. official said the two will discuss the security threat from North Korea, which is continuing preparations for its seventh nuclear test.
In particular, he warned that the possibility of North Korea conducting a nuclear test during Vice President Harris’s visit to South Korea cannot be ruled out and that if it proceeds with a nuclear provocation, it will face strong responses.
The US government explained that the two countries will also discuss economic and technological cooperation at the meeting between President Yoon and Vice President Harris.
At this meeting, President Yoon expects to urge a solution to the problem of discrimination against Korean electric vehicles in accordance with the Inflation Reduction Act, and the reaction of Vice President Harris is noteworthy.
When asked if the trip would help improve relations between South Korea and Japan, a senior US official said the US could not intervene while South Korea and Japan are negotiating, but supported the efforts of the two countries.
He also emphasized the importance of trilateral cooperation between Korea, the United States and Japan.
Along with the bilateral relationship between the US and Japan, the stronger the relationship between Korea and Japan, the stronger it can become globally and beyond the region.
Vice President Harris will also meet Korean women who have pioneered new fields in each industry and hold a meeting on the topic of gender equality.
The US Vice President’s visit to Korea will be the first in four and a half years since then Vice President Mike Pence at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
After President Biden in May and House Speaker Pelosi in August, Vice President Harris visited Korea, and within four months, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the US protocol will all visit Korea.
