A breath of fresh air in the old Hanseatic city

The Hanseatic city wants to become more modern and be inspired by Scandinavian cities.

Rostock Anyone who loves the chic of the Côte d’Azur or the cool atmosphere of Copenhagen will certainly not find what they are looking for in Rostock – but there is also a lively marina and sea air in the East German Hanseatic city.

When the sun is shining, many Rostock residents are drawn to the harbor, where they sit in cafes and restaurants a few meters from the banks of the Warnow River, which flows into the Baltic Sea. Instead of stars and starlets, one sees in the Hanseatic city above all pensioners and students, especially in normal times when several cruise ships dock in Rostock’s seaside resort of Warnemünde for a day trip and lectures take place at the university.

The town hall, a few hundred meters from the riverbank, is also an unusual mix of old and young: the pink building dates back to the 13th century – but behind the facade, thanks to Mayor Claus Madsen, there is an atmosphere like in a London start-up .
