Essential Phone for only $ 250: high-definition audio, Android P beta, built to excellent quality

The Essential Phone, see our full report, started last fall for $ 699. Despite its stunning titanium and ceramic hardware, the camera and software had some problems and it did not sell well.

After two months at this price, the Essential Phone dropped to $ 499. We've seen a number of updates to improve the camera and software experience, along with support for Android P beta, the inclusion of Essential HD headsets, a $ 99 price, and a three-month trial of Tidal Hi-Fi for this price of 499 US dollars.

Amazon Prime Day Specials

The Amazon Prime Day started on July 16 at 12 o'clock Pacific / 3 o'clock Eastern and lasts 36 hours. If you've ever shown interest in the Essential Phone or would like to have a stunning backup phone, I recommend that you pay Amazon only $ 250 while stocks last. Currently the Halo Gray version is available for this low price. Essential said on Twitter that Pure White was available and that more stocks should be listed at this special Prime Day price.

This low price of $ 250 does not include an Essential HD earphone or 360 camera. However, I see (at the time of publishing this post) that all three colors (Halo Gray, Pure White, and Black Moon) can be purchased with the 360 camera for only $ 342.98, so this is a great deal and may allow you to buy a color other than gray.

Essential also stops Amazon Prime Day competition Here you can win one of two Essential Phones for Ocean Depths. This color was my personal favorite and the one I bought a pure white at the end of last year.

MQA audio experiences

At the beginning of June I reported on the new MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) audio experience partnership. Since then, I've been testing an Essential Phone with Tidal Hi-Fi service running through the Essential HD headphones. The Audio Adapter HD is not yet available for testing or buying, but we may be testing it in the future.

My smartphones serve as my primary audio source and I enjoy music and podcasts every day during my train ride. I've heard several songs on different devices with HiFi content from Tidal, including the HTC U12 Plus, the LG G7 ThinQ and the iPhone X. The Essential Phone and the HD earphones were behind the U12 Plus a solid second with great volume audio and a nice mix of bass and treble. HTC has always focused on good audio and with its USonic earphones continues to offer one of the best audio experiences I've ever heard on a smartphone. I also realize that a trial of Tidal HiFi could be a compelling offer for the sale of HTC U12.

The industry has decided to remove the standard 3.5mm headphone jack, but fortunately, Essential includes a high quality USB-C to 3.5mm headphone dongle in the box. The current Essential Phone also ships with the $ 99 Essential HD earphones, and like the Essential Phone itself, these high-quality earphones come with a sizeable clutter, metal USB C plug, metal earphone body and a play / pause remote with microphone ,

The earphones remain through silicone tips in the ear. I found her very comfortable for a long time. They are light and small and should fit with any of the three optional top sizes to each ear.

Android P Beta

Since I do not have Google Pixel, I decided to install the Android P Beta on the Essential Phone. It's great to see that the Android P-beta is being extended to a variety of Android phones this year and it probably helps Essential Andy Rubin to top it off.

One of the biggest differences I enjoy on the Android P beta is the new system navigation gestures. The single central button takes some getting used to, especially after using an iPhone X and OnePlus 6, which use a different gesture method. Switching between apps is definitely different, but I rarely use the task switcher on my phones, though it's a more efficient way to jump between running apps. So far I've used the swipe button more than ever.

Essential Phone review: Beautiful titanium and ceramic with potential for size

The Essential Phone was a hard sell at $ 699, but at $ 499 it's compulsory. It offers flagship specifications with a lot of potential, but there is some risk that a startup will launch its first phone.

There is a lot of potential in the Essential Phone and it is honestly a fantastic piece of hardware with an Android experience. The sale should not go so fast for such a drastic price drop.
