FC Porto played Barcelona for the first time in a private game on November 16, 2003 at the Dragão Stadium. The team, then led by José Mourinho, eventually defeated the Catalans 2-0, but the highlight of the game, along with the Dragons’ first two goals at the new venue, was the debut of a young 16-year-old Argentinian by the name of Lionel Messi .
The Argentina international was already one of the biggest slips of the tongue at the Barcelona schools and Frank Rijkaard brought him on, making his debut in the Catalans’ main team against FC Porto in the 74th minute, replacing Fernando Navarro. In that match he had the number 14 on his back.
