Football – Ligue 1: Beaten in Nantes (2-1), Rennes loses big in the race for the C1

Rennes is disillusioned, the party continues for Nantes. In the wake of their coronation in the Coupe de France, the Canaries brought down their neighbors Rennes in a staggered match of the 36th day of Ligue 1, Wednesday (2-1). If Flavien Tait opened the scoring (36th), the visitors never let go as they aimed for a place on the podium. Kalifa Coulibaly equalized just before the break (45th) and the unexpected Nicolas Pallois scored the goal of Nantes success with style (71st). Rennes finds itself 5th behind Nice. Nantes remains 9th.

Bruno Genesio’s players knew their mission and had had 10 days to prepare, but they were very cautious for too long. Despite controlling the ball, they did not dare to project forward in numbers. More aggressive and stronger in the duels in the middle of the field despite their recent festivities, the Nantes people were thus able to take the upper hand thanks to a better percussion illustrated by Osman Bukari whose center from the right almost took advantage of Willem Geubbels, clumsy to six meters (25th).

Rennes scuttled: “We have no right”

timorous reindeer

Antoine Kombouaré had rotated part of his workforce but his men were present in the engagement. The Rennais still made their technical qualities speak for themselves and Benjamin Bourigeaud served the volunteer Tait well for a recovery at the entrance to the opposing area which hit home (0-1, 32nd). Bourigeaud even sent a vicious free kick on the left on the right post of Alban Lafont (39th) and the center of the active Adrien Truffert towards Gaëtan Laborde was intercepted narrowly then Martin Terrier tried his luck without success in the stride (43rd).

The Rouge et Noir had just let their strong moment pass. Nantes reacted and Coulibaly equalized closely and with the knee on a powerful center from Bukari (1-1, 45th). Genesio shook up his troops at the break and Lafont had to deflect a dangerous strike from Tait (47th) with the gloves. Except that the visitors continued to chain side or back passes instead of really attacking (70% possession and 611 Rennes passes in total against 217 for Nantes).

Pallois more skilful than Laborde

Tait placed a recovery just off the frame on a service from Lovro Majer who did not take enough responsibility (56th). Discreet in front, Laborde, missed the boat on his resumption of the right alone at the far post after a corner on the left (63rd). Kombouaré launched Quentin Merlin, Dennis Appiah and Randal Kolo Muani (68th) and his team which defended as a block found renewed offensive energy. Served by the discreet Ludovic Blas after a corner, Pallois slammed a superb volley from the left at the far post and gave his team the advantage (2-1, 71st). It was his first goal this season and the 1000th overall in Ligue 1.

Already imperial at the Stade de France, Pallois chained in front of delighted Nantes supporters. He even contained Jérémy Doku, who entered the game with Serhou Guirassy and Birger Meling (74th). Until the end and despite the urgency, the Rennais developed offensives that were too predictable and too soft. They suffer a 12th defeat in the league this season. This hurts because they are back in 5th position, 1 point behind Nice and 3 behind Monaco, just before receiving OM on Saturday, for a shock of the last chance in the race for C1. The people of Nantes have already obtained a ticket for the Europa League and intend to still surf on their great dynamic to finish as high as possible in the standings.
