Alzheimer’s is a disease that is evidenced by memory loss, temporal and spatial disorientation, and intellectual and personal deterioration. It happens because there is a degeneration of nerve cells in the brain and a decrease in brain mass.

Y Although each individual with this diagnosis may express it in a different way, the Alzheimer’s Association shares a list of warning signs of the disease.

1. Memory changes that make everyday life difficult

2. Difficulty planning or solving problems

They maintain that some people come to feel changes in their ability to develop and follow a plan or work with numbers. “They may have difficulty following a familiar prescription or managing monthly bills. They may have trouble concentrating and it may take longer for them to do things now than before.

3. Problems performing usual tasks

The context can vary, whether at home or at work, what does happen is that “people with Alzheimer’s very often have difficulty completing daily tasks. Sometimes they may have difficulty getting to a familiar place, managing a budget at work, or remembering the rules of a well-known game.

4. Disorientation of time or place

They indicate that people with this diagnosis, forget dates, seasons and the passage of time. “They may have a hard time understanding something if it’s not in process right now. Sometimes they may forget where they are and how they got there.”

5. Difficulty understanding visual images and relationship of objects

They teach that difficulty can occur when reading, judging distances, and determining color or contrast. This can cause more risk in activities such as driving.

6. New problems with the use of words

This sign will be reflected in having trouble following or participating in a conversation. They may lack fluency or repeat what they say. “They may struggle to find the right words or vocabulary or call things by the wrong name (such as calling a “pencil” a “writing stick”),” exemplifies the association.

7. Placing objects out of place

They point out that they can lose things without being able to slow down their steps to find them and sometimes and more frequently, “it is possible that they accuse others of stealing from them.”

8. Decreased or lacking good judgment

Changes can be seen when making decisions, they may give large amounts of money to strangers or neglect certain habits, such as those associated with personal hygiene.

9. Loss of initiative

It is appreciated when they begin to withdraw from hobbies, social activities, projects at work or sports. “They may have difficulty understanding recent events on their favorite team or how to pursue their favorite hobby. They may also avoid taking part in social activities because of the changes they have experienced,” says the Alzheimer’s Association.

10. Changes in mood or personality

The mood and personality of people with Alzheimer’s can change. “They can become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful or anxious. They can easily get angry at home, at work, with friends, or in places where they are out of their environment,” they warn.

“If you notice any of the 10 warning signs in yourself or someone you know, don’t ignore them. Schedule an appointment with your doctor. By detecting it early, you can explore treatments that may relieve symptoms and help you maintain a level of independence longer. It can also increase the chances of participating in clinical drug trials that help advance research.”, they concluded.
