Washington: A prison officer who escaped with a young man serving a prison sentence in a murder case has shot himself when he was arrested. Vicky White, 58, escaped from an Alabama prison in the U.S. on the eve of his retirement.
The two, who had been in hiding for days, were found by police yesterday. Vicky shot himself shortly after the two were taken into custody. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries. On April 29, the day before his retirement, Vicky entered the official vehicle with the defendant for a psychiatric examination. They were found to have been selling their own home before the incident. They also said they were moving to a beach.
Days after the disappearance, police chased their vehicle from Evansville, Indiana, the previous day. The defendant surrendered after being knocked down, but the officer shot himself. It is believed that the two were close. Casey White was sentenced to 75 years in prison for the murder.
