Highways England has released details of a detour in force after the closure of the M4 motorway on Sunday morning (September 16).

The accident occurred at 6:30 am on Sunday morning (16 September) and the Wiltshire police said the westbound lane could be closed for many hours.

The battered tanker is located between junction 17 (Stanton Saint Quinton roundabout – Chippenham) and exit 18 (A46 Bath / Tormarton) and came to a stop in the third lane.

Traffic stopped behind the tanker has now been released.

Highways England have said, "Traffic should follow the solid diamond symbol, leave the motorway at Junction 17 and travel south towards Chippenham on the A350, at the roundabout with the A420 take the third exit.

Take the A420 to Cold Ashton and at the A46 roundabout, take the third exit. Head north on the A46 and turn off at Junction 18 onto the M4.

"Please allow extra time when traveling in the area this morning."
