It increased in the first quarter of 2019 compared to the same period last year by 300 percent, as the World Health Organization WHO announced on Monday in Geneva.

There were more than 112,000 infections reported in 170 countries. A year ago, there had been a good 28,000 cases in 163 countries. It was preliminary and incomplete data, but it was "a clear development recognizable," said the WHO.

The highly contagious and sometimes life-threatening disease is on the rise again. In the rich countries, the spread of measles is mainly due to an increase in vaccine skepticism. In poor areas of the world, however, many people have no access to measles vaccine, as the WHO complains.
