Mexico City, May 13 (EFE) .- United States authorities confirmed this Friday that Mexican shrimp maintains the 2022 certification for export to that country after inspections in which they verified that comparable measures exist in the Mexican fleet for the protection of shrimp. sea turtles.

In a statement, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) of the Mexican Government reported that this day the US Government published in its Federal Register, said certification to Mexico, a country that, it said, “has adopted programs to reduce the bycatch of sea turtles in its shrimp fisheries, which are comparable to the US program.

With this decision, the Mexican shrimp certification is maintained after recovering from October 2021, after being suspended in May of that same year.

The note indicated that the assessment given to this fishery in Mexico was based on the visit of representatives of the Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Department of State to Mexico in October 2021 and February 2022.

The inspection visits by the US authorities took place in the main fishing ports and they verified that the measures are comparable to those carried out on the coasts of the United States for the protection of sea turtles.

La Sader said that this was the result of the work of the awareness and training program on the construction, installation and proper use of the Sea Turtle Excluder Devices (DET) and Fish Excluder Devices (DEP), which intensified the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (Conapesca) since 2021.

Precisely in 2021, Conapesca reported a training scope of more than 3,000 people and the 2022 Program is advancing in the main ports of the Republic.

He recalled that during the shrimp ban, courses-workshops aimed at netters, crew members and boat owners have been applied by Federal Fisheries Officials, with the support of the Secretariats of the Navy and the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).

The statement noted that pursuant to Section 609 of Public Law 101-162, the United States “annually verifies the comparability of sea turtle protection programs based on three criteria: regulation or legislation; law enforcement, reflected in the proper use of TEDs, and training. EFE
