Umpire Joe West confiscated the cap of Mexican pitcher Giovanny Gallegos in Wednesday’s game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago White Sox on suspicions of using a prohibited substance.
West’s suspicions would have been raised when Gallegos was running from the bullpen; the substance possibly it would have been pine resin. The now umpire with the most games refereed in MLB confiscated the cap.

After Gallegos received a new cap and had no trouble getting on with the game, in fact, he ended his relief pitching 1.2 innings without a single batter reaching on base. Manager Mike Shildt was sent off by West himself for a minor claim.
Pine resin is a common substance used by pitchers to improve ball grip. However, being a non-gambling substance, it is illegal to use it, but that has not stopped several pitchers from finding a way to put it on some garments.
